  1. This is Streamer. A very simple FREEWARE tape backup program. I
  2. use it with an Archive Viper 5150S tape attached to a MacIIsi
  3. running System 7. It's primitive but it does work. It should work
  4. with most tape devices - let me know if it doesn't work with
  5. yours.

  7. I wrote it because I picked up the tape drive from a dead unix
  8. box, and I didn't want to pay out 120 pounds for all the flashy
  9. features of Retrospect (that I don't need!). So don't expect too
  10. much.

  12. If there's much interest, I'll do some extra work and add a few
  13. more features and a flashier interface. But I warn you, the next
  14. version is likely to be shareware! This one is free but copyright.

  16. What is does now:
  17.  
  18. Backs up the contents of a selected drive or folder.
  19. Lists the contents of a backup tape.
  20. Restores the contents of a tape to a drive or directory.
  21. (WARNING - this will overwrite existing files with the same name)
  22. Reads/Writes single files to tape (useful for UNIX TAR tapes).

  24. Ideas for the future:

  26. Direct UNIX TAR support.
  27. Selective restore (it presently restores everything).
  28. Incremental backup facilities.
  29. Better interface.
  30. Provide general tape interface/debugging support.
  31. System 7 toys (Balloon help + Apple events).

  42. It's free, so there's no warranty. If it doesn't work for you,
  43. well, tough! Remember, restore CAN and WILL overwrite files if
  44. they have the same names as the ones on the backup. The shouldn't
  45. normally be a problem. (Most backup programs do exactly the same
  46. thing!)
